4x156 Wheels on a Smart, Prius, Corolla, Matrix or Vibe: Adapters, Sizes and What Fits
In this guide
Small cars, big-car wheels. The off-road wheels we sell for lifted Smarts and Toyotas are 15x7 with a 4x156 bolt pattern. None of these cars has a 4x156 hub from the factory, so the wheel adapter is the part that makes the whole stance work. This guide covers which adapter your car needs, what sizes our wheels come in, which tires we list for each car, and what to order so nothing is missing on install day.
Why 4x156 needs an adapter
A bolt pattern is two numbers: how many lug studs the hub has, and the diameter of the circle they sit on, in millimeters. A 4x156 wheel has four lug holes on a 156 mm circle. Here is what our cars have from the factory:
- Smart Fortwo 451 (2008–2015): 3x112. Three studs.
- Smart Fortwo 453 (2016+): 4x100.
- Toyota Prius (2004–2009), Corolla (2003–2008), Matrix (2003–2008) and Pontiac Vibe (2003–2008): 5x100.
None of those match 4x156, so a 4x156 wheel will not bolt straight onto any of them. A wheel adapter bolts to your factory hub with your factory pattern on one side and gives you a 4x156 pattern on the other. The wheel then bolts to the adapter.
Which adapter fits your car
| Your car | Factory bolt pattern | Adapter | Thickness | Wheels it takes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Smart Fortwo 450/451, 2006–2015 | 3x112 | Smart Fortwo 450/451 Wheel Adapters, 3x112 to 4x156 | 2" front, 2.25" rear | 15x7, 4x156 |
| Smart Fortwo 453, 2016+ | 4x100 | Smart Fortwo 453 Wheel Adapters, 4x100 to 4x156 | 2" front, 2.25" rear | 15x7, 4x156 |
| Toyota Prius 2004–2009, Corolla 2003–2008, Matrix 2003–2008, Pontiac Vibe 2003–2008 | 5x100 | Toyota Prius, Corolla, Matrix and Vibe Wheel Adapters, 5x100 to 4x156 | 2" | 15x7, 4x156 |
All three sets have the same basics:
- Four adapters per set: two front, two rear.
- Hubcentric on the vehicle side, so the adapter centers on your hub, not just on the studs.
- Silver conical seat hex lug nuts included.
The Smart sets are staggered, thicker in the rear than the front, and one-piece. The Toyota set is 2" at all four corners and one set covers all four Toyota-platform cars.
One adapter set per car is the whole job. You don't mix and match, and a 451 adapter will not fit a 453: the hubs are different patterns.
Wheel sizes: what we stock in 4x156
Every aftermarket wheel in our wheel collection is a 15x7 (15" diameter, 7" wide) in 4x156, sold as a set of 4. Brands include Fuel, KMC and MSA Offroad. Where they differ is offset, backspacing, center bore, load rating and finish.
| Offset | Backspacing | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 10 mm | 4.39" | Fuel Runner, KMC Toro S, MSA Offroad Commander, MSA Offroad Portal |
| 13 mm | 4.51" | Fuel Anza, Fuel Maverick, Fuel Vector |
| 38 mm | 5.50" | Fuel Cycle, Fuel Piston, KMC Technic |
Offset and backspacing, in plain English
Offset is the distance, in millimeters, from the wheel's mounting face to the center line of the wheel. The higher the number, the further the mounting face sits toward the outside of the wheel, which tucks the wheel further in toward the car. Backspacing measures the same thing a different way: the distance from the mounting face to the inner edge of the rim, in inches. That's why the two move together in the table: 10 mm pairs with 4.39", 38 mm with 5.50".
On these cars the adapter adds its own thickness (2" or 2.25") between the hub and the wheel, so the adapter and the wheel offset together set where the tire sits in the wheel well. That's one more reason to buy the adapter, wheel and tire for your car as a matched set, and to ask us before you mix in a wheel from somewhere else.
Center bore and hubcentric adapters
The center bore is the hole in the middle of the wheel. On a factory setup, the wheel centers on the hub. With an adapter in between, the adapter centers on your hub (that's what hubcentric on the vehicle side means) and the wheel bolts to the adapter's 4x156 studs.
A few more things worth knowing when you compare wheels:
- Load rating is 1,000 lb or 1,250 lb per wheel, depending on the wheel. Each product page lists its exact number.
- Wheel weight runs from 12.9 lb (MSA Offroad Diesel and Clutch) to 22 lb (Fuel Vector).
- Center bore is 110.1, 115.1 or 132 mm depending on the wheel. Each product page lists it.
- Finish: matte black, bronze, gunmetal, silver and machined faces, depending on the wheel.
Our fitment data lists these wheels for the Smart 451, the Smart 453 and the Toyota-platform cars alike, so pick the look you want. If you're stuck between two, send us your car and the two wheels.
Tires we list for each car
Tires are sold as sets of 4, separately from the wheels. Here is what our fitment data lists today:
| Car | Tires we list |
|---|---|
| Smart Fortwo 451 | 215/75R15 all-terrains (with the 3" lift): Toyo Open Country, Falken Wildpeak A/T4W, General Grabber, BFGoodrich KO2, Yokohama Geolandar |
| Smart Fortwo 453 | Maxxis 205/60R15 |
| Prius 2004–2009, Corolla, Matrix and Vibe 2003–2008 | Maxxis 205/60R15, plus the 215/75R15 all-terrains above (with the 2" lift) |
The BFGoodrich KO2 carries the 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake rating. The Maxxis has a medium tread built for on- and off-road use. Browse all of them in the tire collection, and see the Smart Fortwo tire and wheel guide for the Smart side in more detail.
Do you need a lift to run 4x156 wheels?
Our complete builds pair these wheels and tires with a lift:
- Smart 451: the 3" lift kit, bolt-on with factory mounts and no cutting or welding.
- Smart 453: nearly 3" of lift with our wheels and tires, using the 453 buffer kit, adapters and fender flares.
- Prius, Corolla, Matrix and Vibe: the 2" Toyota platform lift kit.
The 215/75R15 all-terrains need the lift: the 3" kit on the 451 and the 2" kit on the Toyotas. They are not a fit for a stock-height car. The Maxxis 205/60R15 is the smaller tire we list for the milder 453 lift. Planning something else? Send us your car and the tire you want before you order, and we'll tell you straight.
What to order: the checklist
- Lift kit for your car.
- Wheel adapters for your factory bolt pattern (lug nuts included).
- One set of 4 wheels, 15x7 4x156.
